About
About
Tight & Light.
A renovation of a 6m wide house on an 8m wide site.
The existing home was a 1920’s bungalow that had undergone numerous additive alterations.
The clients are a young family of 4 and their brief was for a thoughtfully considered design that created “logical, well resolved spaces”. They were after a family home that felt light and spacious despite the inherent site constraints and that provided a connection to the rear of the site from the primary living areas.
The design response was to maximise the permitted bulk across the narrow site and to carve out volumes to allow for natural light to wash into the living areas, circulation spaces and bathrooms.
A simple, compact, warm & light-filled home.
Space for kids and dogs to run freely with pockets of intimate respite.
"This subtle yet richly conceived addition to an existing house achieved with a modest budget aptly shows how architecture can effectively enrich even the most difficult of sites. The existing 6m wide house, sitting on an 8m wide lot in an inner-city suburb with neighbours pressing in on both sides, is further constrained by the Special Character overlay of the suburb. With little frontage and a south-facing backyard, the alteration works carefully and cleverly draws in light and outlook wherever possible. The result impressively directs pockets of light and moving shadow onto walls and floors, while selectively rounding off sharp corners in favour of flowing surfaces. Varied ceiling and floor heights create a spatial vitality that exceeds expectation."

"Working with Lloyd Hartley was like working with the best team mates you could ask for. I met quite a few different architects before chatting to Ben and I instantly knew Lloyd Hartley was right for us.
Ben and the team put forward and pushed for what was best, rather than drafting what we expected.
From brief to design to build we trusted and valued their counsel throughout."
