Shifting Focus

Conceived of as a Tied Island, the project brief was to create a private semi-connected suite for the parents of three energetic boys, which would fit seamlessly into the landscape and to an existing family home. Part sanctuary, part much-needed amenity, this compact addition introduces soft contours and folds into a simple rectilinear extension of the existing house roof form. Shifting Focus from near to far, cabinetry to garden to horizon, ceiling to sky, the considered placement of openings and gentle curves deftly expands the footprint of the building to take in the surrounding environment, even allowing the owners to sleep under the stars free of any suburban light pollution.

When we began the process with Lloyd Hartley we had some key design elements in mind such as the window seat and above bed skylight. Through clever design these were incorporated seamlessly and have become some of the stand out features of the project.
Lloyd Hartley managed to operate within the limits of our budget without compromising their high-quality design. Compromises in specific areas could be made and we appreciated their ability to find alternatives that still achieved the look and quality we expected. We feel we ended up with a far higher quality product than we envisaged, and the Lloyd Hartley team really invested themselves in the journey right until the end of the build.
Their ability to work with the builder we chose to ensure a high standard was delivered was appreciated.
